How to upgrade from Raspbian Stretch to Buster

Want to upgrade your Raspberry Pi to the latest supported operating system? Look no further. Follow this easy tutorial for more information. Disclaimer: I am not responsible for any data losses. Take a backup if you have important information stored. Upgrade time on my Raspberry Pi 3B+ was ~ 2 hours or so. This will vary depending on your Pi and internet speed.

Things needed:

  • A Raspberry Pi
  • An internet connection
  • 16 GB or more SD card running Raspbian Stretch

Editing Your Sources Files:

  1. Change “stretch” to “buster”:
    sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list
  2. Change “stretch” to “buster”:
    sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list.d/raspi.list
  3. Update:
    sudo apt update
  4. Upgrade:
    sudo apt dist-upgrade
  5. Press y for yes. During the upgrade there will be a pause that needs you to press space throughout the whole text. Then press q to continue
  6. The upgrade will take hour(s) to complete.
  7. When the Pi has rebooted, goto appearance settings and “set default” to load the new theme.
  8. Lastly remove applications that are installed on buster by default:
    sudo apt purge timidity lxmusic gnome-disk-utility deluge-gtk evince wicd wicd-gtk clipit usermode gucharmap gnome-system-tools pavucontrol

A digital signage screen is perfect for your business or shop. It can be used to play videos from  YouTube and local photos. Today we will be downloading and installing Screenly OSE on your Raspberry Pi. You will need to change the default password “raspberry” to something more secure.

Things Needed:

  • Any Raspberry Pi
  • Wifi dongle if no inbuilt wifi
  • 16GB or more Micro SD card
  • Official Raspberry Pi power supply
  • HDMI cable (micro HDMI to HDMI for Raspberry Pi 4)

Downloading and Installing Screenly OSE:

  1. Follow my PINN tutorial and install PINN on your Micro SD card.
  2. Boot up the Pi with PINN installed.
  3. Connect to wifi.
  4. Find Screenly OSE and click the checkmark the box.
  5. Install screenly OSE.
  6. Boot into the OS.
  7. After a while, the screen should show details regarding how to connect to the Pi it up.
  8. On your phone or computer, connect to the Pi, open a web browser and navigate to the website given.
  9. Setup the wifi connection for the Pi.
  10. Using Ting or logging into your router to find your Pi’s IP address, copy it and enter ipaddress:8080 into a web browser on the same internet as your Pi. Replace “ipaddress” with your raspberry pi’s IP.
  11. The page should look something like this:
  12. Add your own media with “Add Asset”. Your Raspberry Pi should automatically start showing all “Active Assets”.

Have you bought an HDD for your Raspberry Pi recently and want to transfer all your separate OSes to the HDD? With this tutorial, you will be able to transfer almost any OS into a multi-boot. Furthermore, you can also boot your Raspberry Pi from a Micro SD card, but the filesystem is on the HDD. Basically what this means is that the boot partitions will be stored on a Micro SD card and that the root partitions will be stored on the HDD. Do you have files that are in a .ecm format? Well, this short tutorial will show you how to install and use the tool to easily be able to uncompress such files. This should work on most versions of Linux. We have tested it on Debian Linux, Raspbian. Most types of files needing this tool are PlayStation 1 games. This tool will be able to uncompress games for RetroPie. RetroPie does not support files in this format. They will have to be converted. PlayStation 1 games often come with a .ecm format.
